February is shaping up to be an excellent month for family fun on skis! The light is coming back, the trails are all in fantastic shape, and the Southcentral Nordic ski community has three fun kid-friendly events coming up:
The AMH Anchorage Cup Sprint Relay
Sunday, February 13th, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM
NSAA’s Kincaid Sprint relay is a 2-person, 2 kilometers, 2-lap race. Categories include men’s, women’s, youth (14 & under), and mixed divisions. Youth skiers will race a single lap (2x2kmx1), and adult racers will race two laps alternating with their partner. This short course is great for a pair of friends to get out and race together or for a pre-Valentine’s afternoon date!!
The Sprint Relay is an exceptionally entertaining format for Junior Nordic skiers, so we encourage everybody to join us. And as usual, the Ready 2 Race crew will be on had to support all Junior Nordic skiers. And if you show up without a partner, we’ll help you find a happy race buddy! You can find more details on NSAA’s AMH Anchorage Cup Series page, and if you want to register now, here’s the link:
Note that we’ll have more details coming up in a separate post from Coach Addy (our Ready 2 Race site director) coming up soon.
Ski 4 Kids
Saturday, February 26th, from 12:00 – 3:30 PM
Ski 4 Kids is a one-day festival that features outdoor activity stations, a timed race, and an untimed race. Timed race registration ends at 5 PM on February 24th. Day-of-event registration will run from 12–1 PM, and the races will start at 1:30 PM. The Ski 4 Kids volunteer crew will set up the storyboard course on the 26th, and we’ll leave it up for all to enjoy through the afternoon of Saturday, March 5th. Note that Ski 4 Kids takes the place of our regular Saturday Junior Nordic practice on the 26th, and we strongly encourage our Junior Nordic skiers to attend!
You can register online @ https://nordicskianchorage.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/nordicskianchorage/eventRegistration.jsp?event=183&
Ski 4 Kids is free for all, but donations are encouraged. Event donations directly benefit local ski programs through NSAA’s ski equipment grant program. So if you’re looking to support an impactful community program, please consider donating to the Ski 4 Kids event! Erin Whitney Witmer, Ski 4 Kids Committee Chair, encourages NSAA members to consider a donation, “This is a great way to support kids in an active and healthy lifestyle, and also build an even stronger community of skiers to support trails and programs in the future.”

The Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm Classic Race
Sunday, February 27th at 12:00 PM
Be a part of the inaugural KMTA Classic, a family-friendly classic ski race on the 5k Nordic Loop in Girdwood, AK. Co-hosted by KMTA and the Girdwood Nordic Ski Club, this event will celebrate the joy of Nordic skiing and the region’s rich history. So join us on February 27th for some fun in the snow! All proceeds will benefit the Girdwood Nordic Ski Club and Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm National Heritage Area. Race options include a 2k course, a 5k timed course, and a 2x2x2 relay.
The 5k Nordic Loop in Girdwood is fabulous, and this event will certainly be well worth the drive from Anchorage! And it’s worth noting that kids 12 and under get to ski this one for free! For more information (include a registration link), visit:
